Description: Shakespeare’s controversial portrayal of the Jew, Shylock, as a ruthless moneylender is the topic of this program featuring Wolf Mankowitz. Mankowitz reveals the characterization as a manifestation of racial prejudice against English Jews in Elizabethan times. Dialogue from the BBC production of the play consistently reinforces Shylock’s unsavory nature, while Mankowitz presents evidence that Shakespeare, in developing the character, was merely pandering to the racial prejudice of his day. Mankowitz discusses how accusations of involvement in ritual murders of Christian children and other like atrocities fed the usurious image of the Jew, and how that image was used by the Nazis to justify the Holocaust. Produced by Victor Poole; directors, David Wilson, Sally Kirkwood.
